The Art of Bharatanatyam

Bharatanatyam is one of the oldest classical dance forms of South India, with a history spanning more than 2,000 years. Originally performed in temples as a devotional practice, it has grown into a complete art form that joins intricate footwork, expressive hand gestures, and a deep grounding in music and rhythm.

As a dedicated teacher, I strive to share the profound beauty and spiritual depth of Bharatanatyam with my students. My teaching approach emphasizes both technical precision and artistic expression, helping each student develop their unique connection with this ancient art form.

Founder & Principal Instructor

With over 15 years of training under the guidance of Kalaimamani Smt. Uma Anand, daughter of Padmashri K.N. Dandayuthapani Pillai, I have cultivated a deep understanding of Bharatanatyam. I am honored to follow the Pandanallur style of this classical dance form, which I also teach to students in Atlanta, GA, through both in-person and online classes. As a passionate educator and choreographer, I train students for various Tamil Sangam and Tamil school programs. My journey in Bharatanatyam began at the age of 12, and my expertise extends to Nattuvangam, which I learned under the guidance of my Guru. I hold a Bachelor's degree in Dance (B.Dance) from Chidambaram Annamalai University. My dedication to the art continues to inspire and empower my students, fostering both technique and artistry in every class.

Before You Enroll

The questions families ask us most often. If yours isn't here, please write or call.

My child has never danced before. Which class do they join?

The Beginner class — it assumes no prior experience at all. Students start with namaskaram, the basic standing position (araimandi), the adavu families, and hand gestures (mudras), with the theory taught through stories.

Can we watch a class before enrolling?

Yes. Prospective students and parents are welcome to observe, or to join a single trial class by appointment. Placement in a level is decided by the guru after meeting the student.

What should students wear to class?

A practice saree or a salwar with the dupatta pinned, hair tied back neatly. Salangai (ankle bells) are introduced after the first year, at the appropriate stage of training.

How much practice is expected at home?

Daily practice, even if brief, is expected at every level. Regular attendance is required for students who wish to take part in stage performances and festival items.
